At Least 1700 People Have Died from Heat in Portugal and Spain

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) European Office, Hans Kluge, has stated that the heatwave in Portugal and Spain has resulted in at least 1700 deaths, according to Gazeta.

“In recent decades, hundreds of thousands of people have died due to extreme heat, which often coincides with wildfires. This year, we have already witnessed more than 1700 unnecessary deaths solely during the current heatwave in Spain and Portugal,” the organization mentions on its website.

Kluge also expressed concern that wildfires have now reached the north as far as Scandinavia, while a fire in London destroyed 41 homes.

Earlier reports indicated that temperatures in Denmark have surpassed the record set in July, which was recorded 81 years ago.
