In recent days, residents of Yerevan have been reporting to SHAMSHYAN.com, expressing their justified outrage that they have been visiting the ‘Shahumyan Cemetery’ for several days but are unable to approach the graves of their loved ones.

In a conversation with photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan, the citizens stated,  “For several days now, we have been visiting the graves of our deceased in the morning to conduct memorial services and lay flowers, but we cannot approach because, apparently, the irrigation water pipe has been damaged, and the water is flowing uncontrollably. Several graves are flooded with water to the extent that it has eroded the soil, creating pits and cracks, and if the relevant authorities do not take action, the water will completely wash away the soil layer and the coffins will surface.”

“We have approached the ‘Shahumyan Cemetery’ administrators this morning to address the issue, but to no avail. We have reached out to the Ajapnyak community administration, and they say they cannot help us. We contacted Veolia Water, and they also say they have no solution. Now we do not know whom to turn to, so that at least if they do not think of us, they can think of the deceased.”

“Can we imagine that even 40-42 degrees Celsius can’t erase the trace of water since it was flowing so violently?” The report also mentions that the oversight of cemeteries is the responsibility of the Yerevan Municipality.
