VIDEO: A Ukrainian plane carrying 12 tons of hazardous cargo has crashed
The Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane that crashed in Greece was transporting 12 tons of hazardous materials. This is reported by the Associated Press, citing local media.
"There were eight people on board the aircraft. It was carrying 12 tons of hazardous materials, mainly explosives. However, local officials stated that they did not have specific information about the cargo and provided varying accounts regarding the number of people aboard the plane," the Associated Press reports, referencing Greek media.
Due to the possibility of poisoning from the unknown contents of the cargo, firefighters, doctors, and local residents were evacuated from the scene. Additionally, residents of nearby areas were advised to stay indoors, close their windows, and wear protective masks. Authorities have not yet been able to confirm whether there were dangerous chemicals on the crashed plane.
The mayor of the municipality of Pagaios, Filippos Anastasides, reported that explosions were heard from the plane for two hours.
The Ukrainian plane crashed on Saturday, July 16. It was en route from Serbia to Jordan. There were eight crew members on board, and no passengers. It is known that the plane’s engines failed, after which the pilot requested permission for an emergency landing. After landing at Kavala Airport, the plane disappeared from radar screens.
