When Will Sri Lanka Elect a New President: Daily Mirror
Sri Lanka's parliamentary and presidential elections will take place by March of next year following the resignation of current President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Daily Mirror reported, citing senior government sources.
“Rajapaksa's presidency will end on Wednesday after the announcement of resignation by the Speaker of Parliament (Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena),” the paper noted.
It was previously reported that the President and Prime Minister of Sri Lanka announced their intention to resign. Thousands of protesters stormed their residences the day before.
The economic shocks have plunged the island nation of 22 million into a severe humanitarian crisis, causing millions to struggle for food, medicine, and fuel, the publication stated.
Neither the president nor the prime minister were at their residences when the crowd surged in. Security personnel indicated that both had moved to secure locations protected from the assault.
