VIDEO: Protesters Lie on President's Bed in Sri Lanka
Due to unrest in Sri Lanka, an extraordinary session of the Sri Lankan parliament is expected in the coming minutes. The country's president has already announced that he is ready to comply with any decision made by party leaders. Meanwhile, footage of the chaos that took place at the presidential residence has emerged on social media.
The clips show how protesters are having fun inside the presidential palace.
It should be noted that the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, has refused to become the acting president of the country. This was announced by Rauff Hakeem, the leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress.
Prior to this, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe called an urgent meeting of party leaders (some, including the Prime Minister, participated via Zoom). A group of lawmakers urged the president to resign. According to the constitution, the Speaker of Parliament should become the acting president of the country.
Today, protests have been organized in the capital of Sri Lanka. Instead of the planned peaceful march, protesters broke through the police barricade and seized the president's residence. As a result of the protests, at least 40 people were injured, including two police officers.
