Armenian and Russian Experts Discuss Construction of New Nuclear Power Unit in Armenia
Within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the 'Armenergo' LLC and AO 'Rusatom Overseas,' the process aimed at the construction of a new nuclear power unit in Armenia has commenced. The latest meeting of the established joint working group took place on June 23, led by Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Hakob Vardanyan. The Russian delegation was headed by Viktor Kolesnikov, project manager and advisor to the president of AO 'REP.'
In accordance with the agreements reached during the first meeting, the agenda included discussions on the structure of the preliminary feasibility study for the large-capacity VVER reactor, the technical assignment for carrying out the feasibility study, as well as the normative technical documents and licensing approaches that would be applicable.
During the discussions, the participants considered a standard energy unit of the VVER type with a capacity of 1000-1300 MW, which has undergone the necessary tests. Representatives from the Armenian Nuclear Safety Regulation Committee were also present at the meeting. After reviewing the proposals from the Russian side, they presented the regulations in force in Armenia regarding the design of nuclear installations, site selection, construction, and licensing of safety guarantees.
As a result of the discussions and various Q&A sessions, both sides emphasized the effectiveness of the meeting, which already represents a significant step in the responsible process of realizing the project.
