No One Speaks of the EC Member State Occupying Armenia's Sovereign Territory: Mamijanyan's Speech at PACE
MP Hayk Mamijanyan from the 'I Have Honor' faction delivered a speech at the PACE plenary session.
"Esteemed Chair, ladies and gentlemen,
We all know that there has been the Stone Age, the Golden Age, and so on. Now, I believe we live in a rubber age of European values. These values bend and twist at the whim of politicians. This was evidenced by yesterday's discussion regarding the UK's government response to a decision by the ECHR.
There are several more facts. The European Parliament has adopted four documents emphasizing the demand for the immediate return of prisoners, the unacceptability of social terrorism, such as leaving the people of Artsakh without gas supply during harsh winter conditions, and clearly identifies the real aggressor of the 44-day war, yet this had no consequences for an EC member state.
Madam, you referred to a part of my homeland as Azerbaijan's historical territory. One of your colleagues is already preparing the ground in the Milli Mejlis for Azerbaijan to provoke new aggression concerning the 'corridor.'
And Mr. Huseynov, we are not restorationists; we are patriots. Moreover, no one speaks of the fact that an EC member state has occupied Armenia's internationally recognized sovereign territory and simply refuses to leave.
There are also several other facts concerning my country's internal political life. For instance, the police brutally beat peaceful participants of a rally at the threshold of the EU embassy in Yerevan and used flash-bang grenades. And I use the word 'threshold' not metaphorically, but literally.
Journalists and opposition MPs are not allowed to participate in discussions on democracy and freedom of speech, which were also attended by local EU officials. Yes, you heard it right; journalists were not allowed to participate in the event about democracy and freedom of speech.
A few days ago, in my country, the government's accumulating hate speech reached a tragic level: three people were killed due to political views. A recording is being published and widely disseminated, where the current and former presidents of the Supreme Judicial Council discuss how they plan to frame opposition figures.
This entire calamity is due to populists and dictators. And don't be mistaken, populists quickly turn into dictators. This is a political pandemic. And we must fight against it with all our might, just as we did against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ladies and gentlemen, I have been taught that values should be as solid as a rock. I refuse to believe that Europe will turn a blind eye to democracy and human rights. I refuse to believe that Europe has forgotten about the right to self-determination, which is essentially the right to live for the people of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Europe has previously been the banner of Christian-democratic values. Even if you have decided to abandon that banner now, we will proudly wave it, for it is the cross we must bear.
Thank you.
There was a need for a quick change to my speech to respond to the absurdities of the Azerbaijani delegation, so I briefly addressed political prisoners, the murders of this week, and a number of other anti-democratic facts."
