Military Unit Commander Embezzles 2.5 Million Drams Worth of Gasoline and Diesel Fuel
The Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia has gathered sufficient evidence during the investigation of a criminal case indicating that S.Y., who held the position of commander of a military unit under the Ministry of Defense of Armenia since September 8, 2016, embezzled gasoline and diesel fuel vouchers worth approximately 2.5 million AMD allocated to the same military unit through methods of misappropriation.
According to the Anti-Corruption Committee, the investigation revealed that S.Y., who was officially obligated to ensure the preservation and proper utilization of the property entrusted to him, instead used his official position to unlawfully remove and appropriate 4,515 liters of gasoline worth 1,440,285 AMD and coupons for 3,710 liters of diesel fuel worth 1,001,700 AMD from the military unit’s property fund without documentation, from January 2021 to January 2022.
Part of the embezzled coupons was used by S.Y. for personal needs, while others were sold to third parties, causing a total material damage of 2,441,985 AMD to the state.
S.Y. has been charged under Article 179, Part 2, Points 1 and 3 of the Criminal Code of Armenia. As a preventive measure, a signature not to leave was chosen. He fully admitted to the charges against him, provided confessional testimony, and has fully compensated for the damage caused.
The pre-trial investigation of the criminal case has been completed. The case has been sent to the supervising prosecutor for approval and subsequent submission to the court.
