Heavy Rain in Yerevan Exceeds Monthly Norms in Just 20 Minutes

The Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center reports that yesterday evening, strong thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hail were observed in the eastern and southern parts of Yerevan, accompanied by strong winds. The thunderstorm clouds originated from the slopes of Mount Ararat and developed as they penetrated into Yerevan.

Analysis from meteorological radar and satellite images indicates that the thunderstorm cloud was a supercell, with a top height reaching 16 kilometers and a vertical power of 13 kilometers. At the cloud's peak, the temperature dropped to -60 degrees Celsius. A rotating updraft within the cloud caused trees to fall and roofs to be blown off in various areas of the capital.

In some parts of Yerevan, the amount of rainfall during just 20 minutes matched the monthly precipitation norm. Thunderstorms of such intensity are rare meteorological phenomena for Yerevan at this time of year, occurring on average once every ten years.

For the next five days, cyclonic activity will continue to influence the region, with rain and thunderstorms expected, particularly in the evening hours across most areas, and hail also possible in some locations. No rise in temperatures is forecasted until the end of the month, as Armenia will remain under the influence of cold air currents from the Black Sea.
