The Corridor Issue Is Not Subject to Discussion on Our Part: Armenian President
Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan assures that no corridor issue is being discussed during negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. During a meeting with the Armenian community in Russia, the President recalled that the President of Azerbaijan regularly speaks about the corridor, emphasizing that any corridor-related logic is unacceptable for the Armenian side.
“This issue is not discussed by us at all, nor is it discussed with our Russian and European partners. This matter is not subject to discussion on our part. We are discussing other subjects; Azerbaijan says it wants to link with Nakhichevan. We have said that we have no objections, you can use our transport capabilities, let’s think about how we can ease the existing customs and border control regimes within the framework of international norms,” Khachaturyan stated, as reported by Armenpress.
He added that discussions have begun. “There is an interesting question; we say let’s discuss the principles, the Azerbaijanis say give us the coordinates of where the roads will pass. We say no, let’s discuss the principles because after discussing the principles, everything else becomes much easier for us,” Khachaturyan said.
He also remarked that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev seeks to realize the dream of his father, Heydar Aliyev. “During the Soviet years, Baku was building a fast road to Nakhichevan via Meghri, and in 1987, if I am not mistaken, that construction was stopped due to complaints and conflict. He wants to continue the construction of that road. We are ready to discuss that as well, but theoretically, even if it is possible, in practice it couldn't be implemented; it is a complex technical issue,” Khachaturyan detailed.
