Former Moldovan President to Remain Under House Arrest
The Chișinău Ciocana sector court has placed former Moldovan President Igor Dodon under house arrest for 30 days, rejecting prosecutors' request to detain him in a pre-trial facility. This was reported by Interfax.
The same court has ruled that Dodon's wife, Petr Merianu's brother, who was detained alongside him, will remain in pre-trial detention for the next 30 days, according to the media correspondent.
The decisions made by the court can be contested in the Chișinău Court of Appeal within a three-day period. Prosecutor Piotr Yarmaliuk stated that prosecutors will appeal the court's decision.
Dodon was arrested on Tuesday evening after extensive searches at his home, offices, and his parents' residence, among other locations. The day before, prosecutors had filed charges against him for financing a political party by a criminal organization (which carries a minimum prison sentence of three years), treason (which carries a minimum sentence of 12 years), and illegal enrichment (up to 7 years in prison).
