Armenia's Foreign Ministry Responds to Azerbaijan's Proposal to Surrender Seven Tavush Villages and Tigranashen

According to the newspaper "Zhoghovurd", Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov announced on May 10 that as a result of the border demarcation process, seven villages in the Tavush region and the village of Tigranashen in the Ararat region would be handed over to Azerbaijan.

Following these statements, "Zhoghovurd" sent a written inquiry to Armenia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan, posing the following questions:

  1. What agreements exist regarding this matter with the Azerbaijani side?
  2. What response has the Republic of Armenia provided to these demands?
  3. If Armenia refuses to comply with these demands, what will happen?

In response, the Armenian Foreign Ministry provided a general answer, stating: "We inform you that the work of the border demarcation and border security commission should be based on mutually accepted, legally binding documents and maps."

It seems that none of our three questions were adequately answered, leaving unclear whether Armenia has expressed its disagreement regarding the requested territories and what the response would be to our refusal. Furthermore, it raises the question of whether Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is also considering lowering the bar regarding the surrender of these territories—nothing is clear from the Foreign Ministry’s response.

More details can be found in the newspaper.
