Wheat Reserves in Georgia Are Essentially Exhausted

Wheat reserves in Georgia are essentially exhausted, and flour mills will cease operations in the coming days as the country has begun to actively import flour. This was announced by the head of the Georgia Grain and Flour Producers Association, Levan Silagava, as reported by TASS.

He added that according to current Georgian legislation, the import tax on flour is zero, while the tax on wheat is floating and currently stands at $120 per ton. According to Silagava, the UN advises countries to maintain at least two months’ worth of wheat reserves.

Georgia consumes up to 650,000 tons of wheat annually. The republic provides itself with only 15 percent of this amount. The remaining supply is imported, with over 90 percent coming from Russia.
