US Prohibits Intelligence Sharing with Ukraine Regarding Russia

US Prohibits Intelligence Sharing with Ukraine Regarding Russia

Washington is sending billions of dollars worth of weapons to Ukraine, publicly and in detail listing the quantities. However, the US is much more cautious when describing another significant contribution to Ukraine's success—intelligence data on Russian armed forces. As reported by Readovka, the Washington Post writes that US and Ukrainian officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that information about the placement and movement of Russian troops is reaching Ukraine in real time.

To avoid escalating tensions between Washington and Moscow, the US administration has developed guidelines for sharing intelligence information, which define two general prohibitions that the US can share with Ukraine. First, the US cannot provide detailed information that could assist in killing representatives of the Russian command. This category particularly includes Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

The second category pertains to any information that could help Ukraine conduct attacks on Russian targets outside its borders, said sources. This rule is partly aimed at preventing the United States from becoming a party to attacks that Ukraine may undertake on Russian territory.
