Ombudsman’s Response to Assault on Student at School

Ombudsman’s Response to Assault on Student at School

Today, the incident of a teacher's violence against a student at Suren Spandaryan Secondary School No. 24 in Yerevan is highly condemnable and cannot be compatible with the conduct of an educator. This was stated by the Human Rights Defender of Armenia.

“In ensuring the protection of children from physical, mental, and other forms of violence, responsibility lies with both the parents and legally responsible individuals, as well as education officials and educators. It is also important to note that the response of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, the responsible body for the sector's policies, has not been delayed. However, systemic measures are also needed to promote the professional training of educators and administrative staff on children's rights issues and to consolidate child-centered and child-sensitive approaches in educational practices.”

As the national mechanism for monitoring the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the body for preventing and protecting children's rights violations, the Ombudsman will ensure that those responsible for the specific case are held accountable, and clarifications have been requested from the relevant authorities,” the statement reads.
