Has Mikheil Saakashvili Been Denied Food? The Country's Prisons Clarify
The Georgian prison service (GPS) has refuted reports that Mikheil Saakashvili has been denied food. According to the prison service, the former president of Georgia, who is in Rustavi prison No. 12, has not received a package for just one day.
As reported by Aliq.ge, the service commented on the statement by Eka Kherkheulidze, a member of the opposition 'United National Movement', who said after visiting Saakashvili that 'they have closed all routes for him to receive food.' Kherkheulidze indicated that some food packages had been allowed to be sent to Saakashvili, but the prison authorities prohibited this.
'Saakashvili has not received a package for only one day... For the record, while in the correctional institution, M. Saakashvili has received packages multiple times. We clarify for the public that Saakashvili can also purchase food items that are not prohibited by the regulations from the shop located within the facility using the money credited to his card,' the statement said.
It is also mentioned that Saakashvili is provided with three meals a day, like other inmates.
The prison service has also denied reports from several media outlets about the possible poisoning of Saakashvili, calling it a 'discrediting' act against its staff.
Saakashvili's lawyer, Nika Gvaramia, wrote on social media that Saakashvili is not starving but simply cannot eat, and thus his diet has consisted only of low-fat sulguni cheese and cucumbers.
It is noteworthy that Saakashvili's supporters continue to demand his transfer to a foreign clinic for treatment. During the latest court session, the former president complained about his poor health and inadequate medical treatment, stating that he is practically unable to eat, which has resulted in a weight loss of 12 kg.
