Video: Child Rescued from Debed River, Mother Arrested, Police Detail Incident

On April 25, at 17:45, the police department of Tumanyan received a report from the 911 service stating that a child had fallen into the Debed River in the town of Alaverdi. An operational group was dispatched and identified the two-year-old girl's identity. According to her 31-year-old mother, the girl had fallen into the river from a gas pipeline stretching along the bank of the Debed River, adjacent to the railroad bridge in the Piruzan neighborhood of Alaverdi, due to her negligence while left unattended.

Rescue operations were joined by police staff and local residents. Around 18:30, approximately one kilometer away from the location indicated by the mother, a citizen involved in the search efforts discovered the unconscious girl in the Debed River. She was transported to the Alaverdi Medical Center, and subsequently to the Vanadzor Hospital, from where she was taken to the Surb Astvatsamayr Medical Center in Yerevan. On the way to Vanadzor, the girl regained consciousness, and according to preliminary information, her life is no longer in danger.

However, even after the successful conclusion of the rescue operation, police activities did not cease. It was necessary to clarify all the circumstances of the incident, and they did. As a result of extensive operational and investigative measures conducted by the criminal investigators of the Tumanyan Police Department, at 21:30, the child's mother was taken into custody on suspicion of attempting murder from the Debed neighborhood in Alaverdi. She reported that around 17:10, with the intention of unlawfully depriving her child of life, she threw her infant daughter into the river from a height of 3-4 meters. Subsequently, passing bystanders approached her, and she told them that the child had fallen into the river. Those individuals then alerted 911.

A criminal case has been initiated at the Tumanyan Police Department on the grounds of attempted murder. The mother has been arrested and taken to a detention facility. The criminal case has been transferred to the territorial investigative body. The circumstances are being clarified during the pre-trial investigation.
