UN Calls on US Authorities to Unblock Afghanistan's Central Bank Assets
UN human rights experts have expressed concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and called on US authorities to unblock the country's Central Bank assets valued at over $7 billion. This was reported by RT.
“The already critical situation is exacerbated by measures taken by the United States… UN experts have urged the United States to reconsider its decision to block the external assets of Afghanistan's Central Bank,” the UN statement said.
On February 11, it became known that US President Joe Biden signed an executive order to block the $7 billion worth of assets held by Afghanistan's Central Bank in US banks.
Afghanistan's assets, held in US bank accounts, were transferred to a special trust fund at the New York Federal Reserve Bank.
