Some Retail Chains in Germany Limit Sales of Flour and Butter
Since the start of Russia's military special operation in Ukraine, the demand for flour and vegetable oil has sharply increased in Germany, reports the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis).
According to the agency, there was a significant increase in sales during the week of February 21 to 27. The demand for vegetable oil in the period of March 7 to 13 was 123% higher than six months ago, while flour sales increased by 206% compared to September 2021.
From March 14 to 20, the growth in sales of these products has slowed. The volume of vegetable oil sold decreased by 22% compared to the previous week, while flour sales dropped by 19%. However, the demand remains high, as there are no signs of potential supply disruptions, notes Destatis.
It has been noted that many retail chains have restricted the sale of flour and butter due to high demand.
It should be recalled that on March 22, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the situation in Ukraine and its financial-economic consequences pose a threat of global famine due to rising prices of food, fertilizers, and energy.
