Will Germany Open an Account in Rubles to Purchase Russian Gas? Scholz's Response to Putin
Russian gas purchase agreements stipulate payments in euros or dollars, and that is how it should remain. This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Thursday in Berlin.
“We examined the gas supply agreements, and it is written there that payments are made mainly in euros, sometimes in dollars,” said the Chancellor, adding that during his conversation with the President of Russia, he made it clear that this is how it will remain.
According to Scholz, the current situation in Europe does not prevent Germany from reducing its dependency, but this step cannot be accomplished in just two days. “Probably within a year we will be able to eliminate dependence on oil and coal imports, gas will require more time,” he said.
