Germany Proposes to Save Every Drop of Gasoline

To conserve energy consumption, a temporary speed limit may be implemented on German roads, set at 100 km/h on highways and 30 km/h in urban areas. This suggestion was made by Rainer Hoffmann, head of the German Trade Union Confederation, during an interview with Hamburger Abendblatt.

“We must save every drop of gasoline,” he emphasized. At the same time, Hoffmann acknowledged that this measure would not resolve the broader issue of rising energy prices. According to him, energy security can first and foremost be achieved by expanding the network of renewable sources.

Additionally, Hoffmann believes various measures should be taken in the social sector to alleviate the burden on the population. Earlier, German Minister of Economics Robert Habeck announced that Germany plans to become independent from Russian energy resources this year. He claimed that Germany could abandon Russian coal by the fall of 2022 and oil by the end of the year.

However, Habeck admitted that freeing the country from dependency on Russian gas would be more challenging, as Germany lacks the capacity to import liquefied natural gas.
