Information about the Armenian Community in Ukraine

The Armenian community in Ukraine is preparing to evacuate Armenians from the border hot spots if necessary. Marat Hakobyan, a Ukrainian-Armenian political analyst residing in Kyiv, stated this in an interview with Armenpress.

“We are talking about Armenians in Donetsk and Luhansk. The Armenian community has developed a plan to evacuate our compatriots from the combat zone. So far, there has been no request for such assistance. We have already defined routes and transport in place to evacuate Armenians if needed, but I must emphasize, there hasn’t been a demand for this up to this point,” said Marat Hakobyan.

He mentioned that the largest number of Armenians are in Donetsk, with around 50,000 individuals, constituting a community comparable in size to that of Kyiv, Odesa, or Kharkiv. Marat Hakobyan informed that they are also in contact with the embassy on various issues.

“As you know, a state of war has been declared in the country, and this is not the first year for the Armenian community; they know their responsibilities. All infrastructures in the country are functioning, and public transport is operational. Kyiv, however, is experiencing significant traffic congestion. Those who can reach their destinations are doing their jobs. People are trying not to panic, as that is exactly what the adversary is aiming for,” stated Marat Hakobyan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the decision to start a special military operation in Donbas. He stated that the Donbas people's republics had requested assistance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared martial law across the entire territory of the country.
