Azerbaijan Collected Over $100,000 in Fees on Goris-Kapan Road
Azerbaijan collected over $100,000 from truck drivers coming from Iran between November 10, 2021, and January 20, 2022. This is evidenced by calculations made by Sputnik Armenia.
Today, Minister of Economy Vahan Kerobyan informed reporters that after Azerbaijan installed a checkpoint on the Goris-Kapan highway, the volume of goods transportation between Yerevan and Tehran has decreased.
It has already been noted that, according to our estimates, 5% of Iranian truck drivers continue to pay fees to Azerbaijan on the Goris-Kapan road.
In response to Sputnik Armenia's inquiry, the State Revenue Committee provided specific data regarding the number of trucks passing through this route. By comparing this data with the figures we have on vehicles crossing the Armenia-Iran border, we found that the previously presented estimate of 5% is very close to reality. In particular, in December 2021, 5.04% of trucks entering Armenia from Iran passed through the Goris-Kapan highway.
From November 10, 2021 (when the Azerbaijani checkpoints were installed) until January 20, 2022, a total of 536 trucks passed through the route. This refers to Iranian vehicles, as since the installation of the checkpoint, Armenian drivers have not been using this road.
Azerbaijan charges between $130 to $280 in fees per passing vehicle (depending on the cargo). If we calculate based on the minimum fee of $130, it totals about $69,680 collected. However, it is clear that not everyone was able to pay the minimum fee. On average, the amount collected by Azerbaijan could be around $107,200 (approximately $200 per vehicle).
