Without the street, this government will not leave: Kocharian

We were not waiting for any signals from abroad and we are not waiting for any. As soon as I feel that we are able to provide sufficient support to the population, we will move to more active actions. This was stated by the second President of Armenia, Robert Kocharian, during a meeting with journalists on February 17, responding to a question about the possible activation of the opposition.

Moreover, according to the former president, this moment is gradually maturing. Nevertheless, he did not deny that a significant part of Yerevan is still not ready to support him.

“Today's agenda should not be built around bringing someone to power. It should be based on the removal of a specific person from the Prime Minister’s position. In that case, everything will work out. We will have the opportunity to consolidate the political field and ensure the organization of relevant events with the participation of a large number of citizens,” said Kocharian.

Kocharian also emphasized that this government will not leave without the street.

“The latest polls show that the number of people with an extremely negative attitude towards this government has doubled and significantly exceeds those who actively support this government. They say the opposition's ratings are falling, yes, they are falling, but those who are disappointed in us will not become fans of this government; the disappointed ones are those who expect radical steps from us. This means that the opposition mass is not decreasing; on the contrary, it is increasing,” he said.

Speaking about who he sees as a potential president, Kocharian stated:

“If we truly want to have an impartial president who is guided by national interests, then at this moment, when our nation is polarized, the best option would be a respected clergyman of the Armenian Apostolic Church. We need someone now who can also search for bridges to connect. Yes, we need to try to unite our nation, we must also try to preserve our endangered identity. Again, I say that in this case, any respected clergyman could occupy that position,” said Kocharian.
