Refusing the Invitation is Not Allowed: Ruben Matevosyan on Participating in Alen Simonian's Reception
Yesterday, acting President Alen Simonian hosted a reception for Armenian intellectuals. The artists who attended the reception faced severe criticism from the public, with suggestions that the authorities had once again 'exploited' intellectuals. In an interview with ArmDaily.am, Ruben Matevosyan, a People's Artist of the Armenian SSR and also an attendee, addressed the discussions surrounding the reception, stating that refusing the invitation is not an option.
“Being present does not mean everything. Presence means to listen, to see, and especially my speech is about such themes—what intentions exist and where we are heading. I must say that the conversation focused exclusively on the cultural world because culture is in urgent need today. In that regard, our beloved Robert Amirkhanyan presented quite serious not only criticisms but also demands. So, many were simply listeners, as was I,” said the artist.
He noted that the meeting was interesting, but very few people were invited—only 8 in total. “We were invited to see what the discussion was about, what intentions are at play. In any case, the conversation revolved exclusively around the stability of the cultural world,” Ruben Matevosyan stated.
When asked if there were any guarantees for improvements in cultural life from Alen Simonian, Matevosyan replied, “Of course. If demands are put forth, then concerns—not just soft pillows—are also raised, which need to be addressed. In that regard, I appreciated the day very much because it is critically necessary to notice and take ownership in today’s conditions.”
