Peskov: 'Our American partners are often confident on many issues, but then it turns out that it is false.'
The Kremlin negatively assesses the claims made by U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland, suggesting that Moscow is responsible for the leak of American classified documents. This was stated by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President, during a briefing with journalists on Friday.
“We disapprove of this, we do not allow such possibilities. Unfortunately, our American partners are often confident in many issues, but then it turns out that it is false,” he said in response to a question from TASS.
On Thursday, Nuland stated in an interview with TASS that the Russian side had "published" a U.S. classified document in response to Russia’s security proposals.
Earlier, the Spanish newspaper El Pais had published documents that reportedly included the U.S. and NATO responses to Russia's proposals on security guarantees. The responses indicate that the United States and NATO are willing to discuss European security issues with Russia but do not agree to its main demands: to halt the alliance's eastward expansion and to revert its military infrastructure to the 1997 borders.
On Wednesday, the U.S. State Department confirmed that the document published by El Pais was indeed Washington's written response to Russia's security guarantee proposals.
