Under What Conditions Will Infection with Omicron Lead to Severe Illness and Hospitalization?
In recent weeks, there has been a noticeable increase in the risk of hospitalizations due to acute pneumonia among individuals aged 60 and older after infection with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. This warning comes from the Fujimino Medical Center in Japan.
According to the Express news outlet, experts report that more than half of these patients arrived at the hospital with pneumonia and required ventilatory assistance. The director of the medical facility, Akira Kano, stated that acute pneumonia is occurring in elderly individuals who were vaccinated a long time ago, even among those who received both doses of the vaccine. He also noted that information regarding the 'mildness' of Omicron does not align with what he has observed in practice.
For this reason, experts advise individuals over the age of 60 to remain particularly cautious and vigilant amidst announcements that the Omicron variant is less dangerous than previous strains of the coronavirus.
