Hospitalizations Due to COVID-19 Surge in Russia

In Russia, COVID-19 infections surged by 102.8% last week, with hospitalizations rising by 40.4 per 100,000 inhabitants. This was reported to journalists by the federal operational headquarters for the fight against the new infection on January 31.

According to the headquarters, infections increased in 83 out of 85 regions, with 19 regions experiencing a rise exceeding the national average. Reports indicate that hospitalizations linked to the new disease have increased in 80 subjects of the Federation (with 38 of these having more cases than the entirety of Russia).

The Omicron variant has now been detected in 82 regions, compared to 64 last Monday, the headquarters disclosed. Earlier, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova noted that the share of the Delta variant in Russia has decreased to 47.9%, while Omicron and other predominant strains account for 52.1%.

Also, Anna Popova, head of Rospotrebnadzor, announced that there have been 5,900 registered cases of Omicron in Russia, with 90% of those infected contracting the virus domestically, TASS reported.
