At One Point, I Thought the Speaker Was the President of Azerbaijan: Serj Sargsyan on Pashinyan's Statement
There absolutely has been no verbal promise. That is not our modus operandi—to concede anything based on verbal agreements, whether substantial or not. Serj Sargsyan commented on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's statement that the former president had made verbal promises and that it was time to implement those promises from 2018-2019, which are not documented in any papers.
“When I was listening to the parts of that interview related to the Artsakh issue, I was genuinely astonished because there were so-called ‘arguments’ that I have heard from the president of Azerbaijan in 2008, 2009, and 2010. For a moment, I honestly thought that the speaker was not the Armenian leader but the president of Azerbaijan. And I felt pain because he will no longer be able to use the objective arguments that provide us with the right opportunities to reach the status of Artsakh, because if tomorrow he tries to bring up those arguments, he will be reminded of his own words,” said Serj Sargsyan.
According to him, the second observation is that there is a sense of disappointment among certain political forces and many thoughtful individuals in Armenia. “There is an atmosphere of disillusionment. And their claims, I mean both the current authorities and Azerbaijan, that the Nagorno-Karabakh issue is resolved, have somehow affected these people. I have come to declare once again that Artsakh will never be part of Azerbaijan. And for that, despite the devastating war, despite the capitulation, there are still opportunities,” Sargsyan added.
