21-Year-Old Detainee Dies in Artik Penitentiary

On January 31, 2022, around 11:15 AM, a staff member of the security service at Armenia's Ministry of Justice's "Artik" penitentiary reported that a detainee, identified as R.K., born in 2000, was found unresponsive in his bed and did not respond to inquiries.

Immediately following the alert, an attempt was made by the facility's medical staff to provide first aid, while an ambulance was also called. Emergency responders attempted to render assistance; however, around 11:50 AM, the paramedics pronounced R.K. dead at the scene.

The Shirak Regional Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Armenia is preparing materials to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death, and a forensic examination has been ordered.
