The National Assembly Has Not Received a New Resignation Request from Armen Sarkissian. His Powers Will Cease in One Day

If President Armen Sarkissian does not withdraw his resignation request within the next day, his powers will cease.

In a conversation with NEWS.am, the press secretary of the Speaker of the National Assembly, Tsovinar Khachatryan, stated that as of this moment, the National Assembly has not received a new request from President Armen Sarkissian.

Starting tomorrow, the president's duties will temporarily be carried out by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan. He will be succeeded in the position by the vice president who received the most votes, in this case, Hakob Arshakyan.

It is noteworthy that Armen Sarkissian submitted his resignation request last Sunday, citing that “the president does not have the necessary tools to influence the radical processes in domestic and foreign policy during the current difficult times for the country and the nation.” He has served for almost 4 years.

According to the Constitution of Armenia, in cases of dismissal, inability to perform duties, resignation, or death of the president, a snap presidential election should be held no earlier than 25 days and no later than 35 days after the presidential position becomes vacant.

The name of former Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Arayik Harutyunyan, currently the chief of the government staff, is being circulated in the press as a potential government candidate. The opposition has not yet announced anything regarding the nomination of a candidate.
