Who Will Replace the President? What the Law States
As we reported earlier, the President of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, is resigning. Who will replace the president according to the Constitution?
What the Law States
The 142nd article of the Constitution stipulates that the President of the Republic submits his resignation to the National Assembly. The resignation is considered accepted from the moment it is made public in accordance with the established procedure.
According to Article 144, in the event of the President's removal from office, impossibility of performing duties, resignation, or death, until the newly elected President of the Republic assumes office, the duties of the President are carried out by the Speaker of the National Assembly. In this case, it will be Alen Simonyan.
How Will the President Be Elected?
The President of the country will be elected by the National Assembly. At least one-fourth of the total number of deputies has the right to nominate a candidate for President. The candidate for President who receives at least three-quarters of the votes of the total number of deputies will be elected.
If the President is not elected, a second round of voting is held, in which all candidates who participated in the first round can participate.
