Around 230,000 Japanese citizens have already been ordered to evacuate, with at least 10 vessels capsized or sunk.
Evacuations have also taken place in the Pacific island regions, with more than a hundred families in American Samoa evacuated from villages on the island of Savaii due to the large waves.
