Tragic Car Accident Occurs in Shirak Province Due to Black Ice
Today, on January 13, a tragic car accident occurred in Shirak Province due to black ice on the road. At around 4:00 AM, 40-year-old Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, a resident of Gyumri, lost control of his Nissan Tiida while driving on the 66th kilometer of the Gyumri-Armir highway, crashing into a concrete electricity pole.
According to photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan, the driver died on the spot. The collision broke the concrete electricity pole, which is currently being held up by high-voltage wires to prevent it from collapsing.
Shamshyan reports that the entire section of the Armavir-Gyumri highway is covered with black ice, and the road maintenance service failed to take any measures to clear the road of ice or treat it with salt and sand. They only arrived at the scene after the tragic accident to begin their work.
In contrast, the Gyumri-Yerevan highway has been completely cleared of snow and treated with salt and sand by the road maintenance crews.
