US Questions Legality of Kazakhstan’s Request for CSTO Troop Deployment: White House

The United States is unsure whether the request made by the Kazakh authorities for the deployment of troops from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in the country is legal. This was stated by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki during a briefing with reporters.

“We are closely monitoring reports regarding the CSTO sending its collective peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan. We have questions about the nature of that request, whether it was a legitimate invitation or not. At this point, we do not know,” Psaki said, calling for CSTO forces and law enforcement agencies to uphold international human rights obligations.

The White House noted that the CSTO's deployment of peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan has not affected the plans for security negotiations between the US and Russia.
