It Was Necessary for the Leader Who Came to Power Through Revolution to Announce This Intervention: Abrahamyan
Gayane Abrahamyan writes: “Once again, the state interest of Armenia was subordinated and endangered. It is clear that Armenia did not initiate, much less decide, to send CSTO troops to Kazakhstan, but the group of authoritarian countries needed the leader, who came to power through revolution, to announce this intervention.
It has to be he who, during the most severe, historically dreadful days, was abandoned by the CSTO, which even labeled the war and the brazen violation of the sovereign territory as a 'purely border dispute.' Of course, this announcement could have been made on behalf of the CSTO Council, NOT by the Prime Minister of Armenia; it was certainly possible NOT to WRITE about it on the Armenian Prime Minister's website and official Facebook page. It was feasible and necessary.
This is merely a titular position. The CSTO Council is the supreme body of the CSTO, composed of the leaders of the member states, whereas a president is merely the leader of the state that holds the presidency at the moment in the organization.
With this infamous decision, and by announcing it to the world in the name of the Prime Minister of Armenia, the country lost its main, perhaps only, trump card in foreign relations: the positioning as a democratic state, acting as a defender of democratic values. De jure, our membership in the CSTO was understood by international actors; they understood that we had no other option. But now we have also de facto fully integrated ourselves into that authoritarian group, serving the interests of a single individual.'
