Armenian Tourists Unable to Fly from Sharm El Sheikh to Yerevan
More than a hundred Armenian tourists, who were spending the New Year's and Christmas holidays at the seaside resort of Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, have been unable to fly to Yerevan since early Thursday morning as their flight keeps getting delayed. This was reported to 24News by one of the passengers.
“We were supposed to fly to Yerevan at 08:00 local time here (06:00 Yerevan time). We arrived at the airport, and the flight time keeps changing. We are waiting here with families, with women and children. Now it's showing that the flight is at 2 AM. No one is explaining anything; the Egyptian staff are saying some vague things, claiming that Iranian airspace is closed, and so on. They said they would take us to a hotel, but they aren't doing that either,” our interlocutor noted.
Later, the airline operating the flight, Armenia Air, issued a statement saying: “Dear passengers, we inform you that today’s flight of Armenia Air to Sharm El Sheikh has been delayed due to the closure of Iranian airspace. The Yerevan-Sharm El Sheikh flight will be carried out today at 21:30 (Yerevan time). We kindly ask for our passengers' understanding and inform you that all our employees are doing their best to contact the passengers and resolve the issue.” Although according to the statement from Armenia Air, the flight is supposed to take place at 21:30 Yerevan time, it should be noted that the airport flight schedule indicates it will be at 04:00 Yerevan time.
