The Situation Threatens the Residents of Almaty: Tokayev Appeals to the People

In our beloved city, mass attacks on law enforcement officers are taking place. Among them are fatalities and injuries. Robber mobs are beating soldiers, mocking them, chasing them through the streets, assaulting women, and looting shops. The situation poses a threat to the residents of Almaty.

In addition to Almaty, the situation has escalated in several other regional centers. In this regard, I have imposed a state of emergency in several provinces. This is a necessary measure, said Tokayev in his address to the people.

Recall that the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has declared a state of emergency in the Almaty region due to the unrest that occurred last night. The relevant decree was published on the leader's official website.

Protests in Kazakhstan began on the first days of the New Year. Residents of Zhanaozen and Aktau took to the streets to protest against the doubling of liquefied gas prices. Tokayev has instructed to create a commission to investigate the situation, which announced on January 4 that it is ready to meet the main demand of the protesters and reduce gas prices. However, the protests spread to other cities.

On January 4, protesters in Almaty clashed with security personnel, who responded with tear gas and stun grenades. Meanwhile, protesters are gathering again in the center of Almaty. Videos published on social networks show a group of young people, one of whom is holding a special forces shield, which was likely captured from the clashes the previous day. Some participants in the march are using special vehicles that may also belong to the authorities.
