Let's Put Down Our Mandates and Go for New Elections: Vardenis Mayor
The candidate for mayor from the ruling Civil Contract party, Aram Melikonyan, met today with his supporters at the mayor's office. He proposed that the opposition factions 'Unified Vardenis' and 'Aharon Khachatryan' should lay down their mandates and hold new elections. This was reported by pastinfo.
“The opposition gained votes through deceit, so let's go openly and straightforwardly to the elections. Our team stands strong; our votes are not lost, and you will see the outcome of our struggle very soon,” said Aram Melikonyan.
He asserted that the opposition factions had misled the citizens by claiming they supported the 'Civil Contract' in order to gain votes. “Our party’s votes were 'smashed'; people voted for them in an atmosphere of lies and fear, but the winner is the Civil Contract,” Melikonyan noted.
It is noteworthy that in the local elections on December 5, the Civil Contract party received 13 mandates, the 'Aharon Khachatryan' bloc secured 10, and 'Unified Vardenis' got 4 mandates. After the elections, the opposition factions signed a memorandum to form a coalition.
During the Vardenis city council meeting on December 30, despite the Civil Contract party's efforts to obstruct the election of the mayor, 14 members from the opposition factions 'Unified Vardenis' and 'Aharon Khachatryan' voted unanimously—14 in favor, with zero against and zero invalid votes—to elect Aharon Khachatryan as the community leader.
