The Curse of Genocide Victims: Homes Burning for Unknown Reasons in a Van Village
In the Uzun Gedik neighborhood of the Van's Gülyüzü region, houses are burning for unknown reasons. According to Akunq.net, the mystery of these fires remains unsolved and deeply worries the local residents. In 2018, four houses and two stoves burned down in a place called Çılgı in this area, leaving two families homeless.
One of the affected families rebuilt their home 500 meters away from the village, but a fire broke out in the new house as well. Desperate, they have returned to their previous home.
One affected resident, Necmettin Sönmez, told an İhlas agency correspondent that they have been continuously on guard in the last few days, with buckets of water in hand, and that they no longer have peace. He added, “We waited for several years; now our new house is also burning. I went to Istanbul to see a man about it. He told me the fires would stop. We can't sleep until morning. We have buckets of water in our hands on guard. Whenever a part starts to burn, we run to that side. We are very anxious. We have lost our peace and sleep. Our house catches fire 6, 7, 8 times a day, and on some days even 20 times. Everything we had has burned. Nothing is left. I have sick children. Because they are scared, I left them at a neighbor's house.”
The report concludes by mentioning that emergency situation specialists have thoroughly checked the area, but have found no explanations for these mysterious fires. While the Turkish source does not suggest any hypotheses, one cannot help but think: could the cause of these mysterious fires be the curse of the victims of the Armenian Genocide?
