“These people say that Hayk has deviated from the revolution. This is what people who are buying a $200,000 car for the country at this critical moment are saying,” the mayor declared during a city council meeting.

Hayk Marutyan noted that the entire political team has been working for a month to justify the decision to purchase a new car for the President of the National Assembly, demonstrating how necessary this purchase was for the state.

“A country that has 30 percent poverty is asking its international partners for money to renovate its kindergartens, build its roads, and cover its budgetary expenses, justifies the purchase of a $200,000 car by claiming it is for the prestige of the state. This is not prestige; on the contrary, it leaves a bad impression. You do not even evoke pity; rather, you only provoke bewilderment and a smirk,” he stated.

Marutyan reminded that he sold his Mercedes S-Class in 2019, and the money was deposited into the city budget. Throughout this time, he has been driving an economy class Nissan, moreover, without a driver. He mentioned that there has been no talk of bodyguards either.

Marutyan recalled that he has never received bonuses and has not allowed his salary to be raised. He believes this is not heroism; this should be the conviction of any official who has received a revolutionary mandate.

“State work should be a sacrifice and deprivation for many years, but as we can see, unfortunately, my colleagues from the ruling party do not share this principle. So now tell me, who has deviated from the revolutionary values?”

Marutyan pointed out that this is the reason why his connection with the ruling party has been so short-lived.
