COVID-19 Deaths Exceed 3.3 Million Since Start of This Year, WHO Reports
Since the beginning of 2021, more than 3.3 million people have died from the coronavirus, surpassing the total mortality rates from HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis in 2020. This announcement was made by the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“This year, more than 3.3 million people have died from COVID-19. This is a higher death rate than was recorded in 2020 from HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. COVID-19 claims nearly 50,000 lives each week,” Ghebreyesus stated.
According to Ghebreyesus, these figures do not include deaths caused by the coronavirus that are not reported, nor do they account for “millions of deaths related to disruptions in health services.”
