There Will Be No Two Principals in Schools, Says Education Deputy Minister
The Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Zhanna Andreasyan, assures that due to amendments in the law on general education, there will not be two principals in schools. Andreasyan made this statement in an interview with Sputnik Armenia, addressing concerns regarding the recent changes in the law.
It was reported that on November 25, the government approved a draft that proposes to separate the administrative and educational management of schools. However, the school principals and education experts do not fully agree on this change, fearing that it may create dual authority.
“The new law stipulates that there will be a principal in schools who will be responsible for substantive issues regarding the quality of education, and another who will carry out administrative and economic functions. In schools, the demands will be presented by the educators and the educational director, who will outline what is needed, while the administrative coordinator will address those needs,” said Andreasyan.
When asked whether there are enough specialists in the 1,400 public schools to add new positions, Andreasyan replied that first there is a need to bring quality staff into schools, but this provision of the law will only take effect in January 2023. According to the deputy minister, this means there is sufficient time to undertake the necessary work, including developing sub-legislative acts and conducting retraining.
