Germany Has a New Chancellor
Germany's new chancellor is Olaf Scholz, a Social Democrat and the country's finance minister, elected by the Bundestag following a voting session. The session is broadcasted by N24 television.
The chancellor is elected through a secret ballot. To win in the first round, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of the votes. This means that at least 369 out of the 736 members of the current Bundestag must vote in favor. Scholz received 395 votes.
Before the voting, German parliamentarians gave a round of applause to Angela Merkel, who held the chancellorship for 16 years.
