U.S. Embassy in Armenia Issues Statement

The U.S. Embassy has issued a statement regarding the 2021 local self-government elections, stating: “We highly appreciate the participation of the Armenian people in the local self-government elections held on October 17, November 14, and December 5. The commitment of the Armenian people to follow the democratic path is also commendable.

A small number of the embassy's staff observed the elections as visitors. We are pleased to note that the elections were generally held in a calm, peaceful atmosphere and were well-organized. The diversity of the results underscored the competitive nature of the elections, the resilience of Armenia's democracy, and the significant progress Armenia has made over the years.

We have also received reports of pressure on opposition candidates. We encourage the authorities to investigate allegations of abuses. As we work to improve our own democracy, we welcome the Republic of Armenia’s commitment to its agenda of democratic reforms and look forward to strengthening our bilateral ties based on shared democratic values.”
