VIDEO: Iran's Foreign Ministry Discusses Incident on Afghan Border; Cause of Conflict Revealed
Iran's Foreign Ministry official spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh has commented on the clashes that occurred at the Iran-Afghanistan border. MiranPress reports that Khatibzadeh stated, "Today, a conflict occurred in the border area of Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province, resulting in gunfire, which was resolved and concluded through the coordinated efforts of border guards from both sides."
Earlier, both Iranian and Afghan sources reported on border tensions, military buildups, artillery use, and ongoing battles. Videos and photographs have also been published from both sides.
Iranian journalist Khayal Muazzin provided details regarding the reasons behind the conflict. According to the publication, "This afternoon, clashes began between Iranian border guards and Taliban forces in the Shagalak area of Nimroz province over a misunderstanding related to the border. Reports suggest that, in recent years, walls have been constructed within Iranian territory, a few hundred meters from the Afghan border, to combat smugglers and wrongdoers. Today, some Iranian farmers crossed beyond these walls, and despite still being within Iran's borders, the Taliban considered that their country's border had been breached."
Following this incident, Taliban forces opened fire towards the Iranians, which led to a shootout with Iranian forces. In an interview with Tasnim, an informed official emphasized that reports of the Taliban seizing checkpoints on Iran's border are fundamentally false. Some footage was released at the beginning of the conflict, and now the border guards have complete control over the situation.
