What is the difference between a road and a corridor? An expert explains.

During Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's press conference on November 23, numerous claims, denials, and confirmations were made regarding the provision of a road or corridor to Azerbaijan through Armenia. Following this statement, discussions emerged among the public regarding what constitutes a road and what defines a corridor, as well as the nature of the unblocking that Nikol Pashinyan is referring to.

International relations expert Suren Sargsyan provides answers to these questions. "It is a matter of sovereignty and control. A road is just a road; you pass through a neighboring country’s road, whereas a corridor is the mechanism of control over that road, which is the key difference leading to numerous implications," Sargsyan said in an interview with ArmDaily.am.

Addressing the issue of unblocking, Sargsyan remarked, "It's not only us who are being unblocked; we are also unblocking. If we provide a road or corridor, it unblocks Nakhichevan and Azerbaijan because they finally establish a connection with each other. In this regard, it should be considered that we are not the only ones to be unblocked, but we are also facilitating unblocking ourselves."

During his press conference, Nikol Pashinyan stated that providing a road to Azerbaijan is also beneficial for Armenia. When asked how it is advantageous, Sargsyan found it challenging to respond. "I find it difficult to say how it is beneficial. This issue is being discussed in various circles. If there is a road, it’s one thing; if it’s a corridor, it's another. We need to understand whether it’s a road or a corridor and ensure security," Sargsyan explained.
