70 People Detained During Protests in Turkey

Seventy people were detained during protests in Istanbul last night. This information was reported by RIA Novosti, citing Turkish media.

“Unauthorized demonstrations were organized in several districts of Istanbul. Protesters were urged to disperse. Since they ignored the warnings, our staff detained 46 men and 24 women, a total of 70 people,” the Istanbul Chief Security Directorate stated.

It is noteworthy that the Turkish currency has depreciated by almost 40 percent over the past year, and this Tuesday set a new negative record, reaching 13.21 lira against one dollar.

Leaders of the Republican People's Party and the Good Party, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and Meral Akşener, accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of incompetence on November 19. The heads of the main opposition forces called for early elections against the backdrop of the record decline in the lira's exchange rate.

Erdoğan rejected the opposition's demand, stating that the elections would take place as scheduled, namely in June 2023.
