Yerevan Appeals to Moscow to Mediate in Armenian-Turkish Relations

Yerevan has appealed to Moscow to mediate in the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations, the spokesman for the Foreign Minister, Vahan Hunanyan, stated in an interview with Azatutyun today.

According to him, several partners of Armenia, including Russia, have expressed readiness to facilitate the process of normalizing Armenian-Turkish relations. The Armenian side has reached out to the Kremlin.

“A number of international partners, including Russia, have stated that they are ready to support the Armenian-Turkish normalization process. We have informed Russia that we are ready to start the normalization process without preconditions. When and if such a process begins, we will, of course, provide information about it,” Hunanyan said.

Since the second Nagorno-Karabakh war this past August, the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Turkey have made several statements indicating positive signals from the other side. In September, the Turkish President stated that the Armenian Prime Minister had proposed a meeting through the Prime Minister of Georgia, but for the meeting to happen, Armenia must take clear steps regarding the “Zangezur Corridor.”

The next day, the spokesperson for Prime Minister Pashinyan responded to Erdoğan, stating that the corridor approach is unacceptable for the Armenian side, but Yerevan is ready for communication with Ankara.

As of now, according to the Foreign Minister's spokesperson, direct negotiations between Ankara and Yerevan have not yet taken place.
