Edmon Marukyan: I Really Want Armenia to Finally Apply to the UN Security Council

Edmon Marukyan, the president of the Bright Armenia party, wrote on his Facebook page: "I really want the Republic of Armenia to finally apply to the UN Security Council. The LHK has spoken about this since May 25 of this year, when the Azerbaijani armed forces invaded the sovereign territory of Armenia. We issued a special statement and demanded that the authorities apply to the UN Security Council.

I sincerely hope that we will apply to the UN Security Council, as, among other reasons, this would be the right step from the perspective of conducting proactive diplomacy. As you know, I have always been an advocate of proactive diplomacy; my experience and contribution to our parliamentary diplomacy, as well as the efforts made and ongoing efforts, are aimed at enhancing proactive diplomacy.

Nevertheless, a more convincing fact for me has become the discussions in Armenia since May, when many political scientists, political figures, experts, and analysts—all smart individuals—continue to insist that we should apply to the UN Security Council, linking all our misfortunes to our failure to do so. They assert that if we had applied to the UN Security Council, all our problems would have been solved; since the authorities have not taken that step, this is the situation we find ourselves in.

I insist that we should apply to the Security Council as soon as possible to end yet another expectation that has been built up, which may go on to join our other mythological expectations that explode one after another. It may sound blunt, but this forms yet another expectation among the Armenian people from foreign states that will later prove to be false or illusory.

And why is it necessary for us to rid ourselves of this expectation? We must finally understand that international law is indeed the weapon and tool of small countries like ours in foreign relations, which only works when your soldier is in a more protected trench. This tool operates better when the enemy comes forward after seizing your internationally recognized sovereign territory and your multiple launch rocket systems turn them to dust at the moment of border violation. When your mortars start acting in time, destroying the enemy troops rushing toward your positions and trenches. That is when international law works best.

When will we understand that today we should take action within the country and not leave our work to discuss the UN every day while creating another expectation among the Armenian people?

Therefore, I really want us to apply to the UN Security Council as soon as possible so that this discussed issue can finally be closed in our public discourse. This way, we will start to form better trenches and engineering structures along our border, prepare for the marauders’ attacks, so that our multiple launch rocket systems are ready to annihilate the enemy invading our territory. At that time, there will be condemnations and targeted statements from the international community declaring that it is unacceptable to enter the sovereign territory of Armenia. There will also be specific statements from the UN Security Council, and international law will begin to work for Armenia as well. This is what we need—reasonable expectations from international organizations and foreign states, while concentrating on our actions."
